The Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive Handwired is the pedal that built the brand’s reputation, and this edition is wired by hand in Finland with top-mounted jacks and a custom sheet metal enclosure. It is a touch-sensitive low-gain overdrive designed to push an already distorted amp harder and to lay a dynamically controlled layer of light overdrive across a clean amp.
The amount of dirt you hear is mostly decided by your pick attack and pickup output rather than by the Drive knob. Play softly and it stays sweet and nearly clean, hit the strings hard and it opens into a compressed, singing overdrive that keeps every bit of note definition.
The Focus Control
Focus is what separates the Sweet Honey from every other low-gain drive. It controls how easily the circuit distorts while simultaneously adjusting overall EQ. Counter-clockwise gives less distortion and a mellower, rounder effect. Clockwise brings a slight treble boost and earlier breakup. Around eleven o’clock is a great starting point, and from there you can match the pedal to a dark humbucker rig or a bright single-coil setup without touching your amp.
How It Fits Your Rig
Set low, it works as a transparent grit pedal that thickens a clean amp for rhythm work and blues leads. Set higher, it becomes a boost that shoves a cranked amp into sustain without adding hiss or mud. It stacks well in front of another drive, and its very low current draw fits any crowded power supply.
