Thick, Syrupy Optical Tremolo
The Monger Pedals Boiling Honey tremolo pedal is built around a simple idea: what if tremolo could sound like a slowly bubbling pot of honey? It is an optical amplitude tremolo, meaning it modulates the volume of your signal, and it does that with far more control than the two-knob tremolo circuits most players are used to.
Six knobs let you shape the modulation itself instead of just setting a rate. Sym morphs the LFO waveform from downward sawtooth through triangle to upward sawtooth, so a swell can rise gently and drop off a cliff, or the reverse. Smooth rounds off the harsh peaks of that waveform, taking you toward sine-like softness or squarer, choppier pulses. Space shifts where the LFO starts, which changes how the pulse feels against what you are playing. Depth, Speed, and Vol handle the amount, the rate, and the post-modulation output level.
How It Fits Your Rig
Set shallow and slow, it works as an always-on movement pedal that keeps clean parts from sitting still. Push Depth up with a rounded waveform and you get the classic amp-style throb that suits surf, blues, and vintage rock. Take Speed higher with a sharper waveform and it turns into stuttery, rhythmic chop for post-rock and shoegaze textures. It plays well after dirt and before delay and reverb, and the indicator LED pulses with the modulation so you can lock in with a song at a glance. It is a true amplitude tremolo, so it modulates volume rather than pitch. That is what gives it the classic pulsing throb rather than a wobbling, seasick sound.
Can it do subtle always-on modulation?
Yes. Keep Depth low, Speed moderate, and Smooth up, and it adds gentle motion without drawing attention to itself. The same controls dialed further get you extreme, choppy effects.
